What the Heck is a Bath Tea?

Yes, it is a new product and concept this holiday season! In case you missed it, we now are offering Bath Teas in our fabulous Mirabelle Plum Spice scent. Well, a lot of people have a puzzled look when I tell them about it so let me try to explain it. Our bath tea contains sea salt and fragrance plus some floral bits and bobs too. Instead of scooping it out of a jar, we offer it in a convenient pouch that looks like an oversized tea bag. This way the salts and fragrance dissipate into your bath water without leaving anything for you behind to clean up.

Now, what else can you do with these neat little bath teas? You can throw a bag in your sock, sweater or lingerie drawer. Put one in your closet to spread the delicious plum scent throughout your clothes. Stash one in your glove box or sun visor to freshen your car. You can add a bag to your foot soak. How about boiling a pot of water on the stove and give your whole house a warm, spicy scent for a holiday party? Let me know if you have a favorite use!

The Importance of Exfoliating

I truly believe that exfoliating your skin once or twice a week is essential for good skin care. I know that my skin seems to need it in order to keep breakouts away and plus, it just plain makes my skin so soft and smooth. I just feel that my skin builds up dirt and dead skin cells quicker than some so I tend to exfoliate every other day. Another benefit of regular exfoliation is that it allows the other products that you put on your skin to penetrate deeper and work better too. I am excited to have such a great selection of exfoliators from Sensaria to offer people with every different skin type and problem!

Sea Kelp Scrub ~ This was the first scrub that I fell in love with. I enjoy the scent and the walnut shells and apricot seeds provide the physical exfoliation in this scrub. It will really help keep your pores clear of debris and dirt which can lead to clogged pores and blemishes. People with normal, combination or oily skin can use this scrub. I just gently massage onto my face after cleansing and then rinse and follow with a toner and moisturizer. Also, massaging your skin can help promote the skin to create new skin cells so not only are you revealing newer skin after exfoliating but it will help keep you skin looking fresh for longer!

Enzyme Exfoliating Treatment ~ You should not use a physical exfoliator on skin that has blemishes because you will just break open the blemishes and spread the acne causing bacteria around your face and can potentially cause more breakouts. That is why I recommend this exfoliator and plus it is great for anyone who has dry or sensitive skin too. Instead of a physical exfoliant, this one uses fruit enzymes from Papaya and Pineapple that gently dissolve dead surface cells. It is just like putting on a creamy lotion on your skin. I put this on after cleansing in the shower and continue washing my body or conditioning my hair for as long as possible. Rinse it off and follow with a toner and moisturizer.

Face Scrub For Men ~ This product isn't just for men! I love using it especially when my face exploded when I got pregnant with my daughter. Plus, sometimes I am in a rush (what mom isn't?) in the shower so I will use this scrub since it foams up slightly and I feel like I am getting clean and exfoliated at the same time. This product uses microbeads of volcanic pumice to provide a physical exfoliation. For men who use this product, massage your face before shaving as it will provide you with a closer shave. It will help raise up stubble and get rid of dead skin cells which can clog razors. It will also help prevent ingrown hairs. I would suggest that men and anyone with acne prone or oily skin could use this scrub as well.

Microdermabrasion Creme ~ If people think scrubs are too harsh on their skin then maybe they are not using a good quality scrub or perhaps they are using it too often. Or perhaps they just need to start using our Microdermabrasion Creme! This product is gentle enough even for people with sensitive and dry skin who might not have thought they could use a physical scrub before. It uses a gentle blend of volcanic microdermabrasion crystals suspended in a soothing, conditioning crème. It is really far superior to any scrub I have used before. The crystals are so fine that you barely notice them at all but you certainly won't miss the results! I was looking around at various spas on their microdermabrasion treatments and they can cost anywhere between $90 and $130 for an hour treatment! This little jar will last much, much longer and you don't have to go to a fancy schmancy salon either!

The Purpose of a Toner

I ask this question at almost every spa party because I think toners have gotten a bad rap over the years and also people don't really know what they are for. It's really easy actually once you know.

Our toners are meant to be misted onto your face after cleansing and before moisturizing. You can use a cotton ball and swipe it over your face but personally I feel it is a waste of a cotton ball. If you are using a toner now that contains alcohol or your cotton ball is dark/black after using your toner ... please don't use it anymore. It is probably too harsh on your skin. A good cleanser should remove all dirt and debris from your skin so if anything is still on your face then you need to use a good Eye Makeup Remover and/or cleanse your skin again.

So, what is the purpose of a toner? To balance the PH of your skin and to prepare your skin for moisturizer. Any cleanser will change the PH of your skin in order to get it clean and you will notice that by using our toners you will need to use very little moisturizer after. Let me know what you think!

More Uses for Freshing Mist

This tip came from another rep who was at a team meeting a few months ago. It just stuck in my head and I thought it was time to share! If I got the story wrong then please correct me! I recall that she was walking past someone's office when she saw a bottle of Sensaria's Freshening Mist sitting in her window. She knocked on the door and asked her about it and why it was in her office instead of her bathroom. Well, it turns out that the lady used it for an air freshener for her office! You can't burn candles or have heavily scented products in an office environment and she just loved the clean, citrus smell that the mist had. I thought that was a clever use of the product especially since that bottle lasts way longer than the rest of the skin care products!

You also may have read my previous tip about "Freshening Mist Treats Diaper Rash" and I have now started using it to freshen up my daughter's room after a poopy diaper! I have also used it in the diaper pail and in her stinky shoes too! It is a great multipurpose product that you can use in more places than just your face. Did you know that you can use the Freshening Mist for setting your makeup or as a quick pick me up in the middle of the afternoon? It is really refreshing especially on a hot day or in a stuffy office. It hydrates your skin and the scent is a nice refresher too. Let me know what your favorite use is for this product!

What's the Deal with Parabens?

This topic comes up every now and then but especially during my busy season right now. I had someone at a spa party ask about it and I really hope I answered the question for her. It was hard because I had not been asked about parabens in a long time so it took me off guard. Also, the topic came up on a message board and it got me thinking about it again. I looked up all my research and information that I had found a few years ago when I first started with Sensaria and then found some new information as well. It is REALLY hard to sift through all the rubbish and self-serving information out there so be warned if you do your own research. I just want to share the information that I have found. I hope it helps!

So, first of all ... What are Parabens?

Wikipedia defines it as: "Parabens are a class of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Parabens are effective preservatives in many types of formulas. These compounds, and their salts, are used primarily for their bacteriocidal and fungicidal properties. They can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical/parenteral pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solution and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives."

Sensaria's Director of Product Development has this to say about it:

"Parabens are preservatives that are added to skin, hair and body care products to protect the product and the consumer from the many types of bacteria and fungus that can grow in a product. These unwelcomed 'critters' can compromise the integrity of a product (make it separate, make is smell bad) and can in some cases can hurt you (from skin rashes all the way to blindness). Parabens are the most-used preservatives in cosmetics and drugs, yet they are the least likely among traditional preservatives to cause irritation or allergies. They’ve been used in cosmetics since 1938 and are among the safest ingredients used in cosmetics and drugs. Sensaria uses a blend of parabens in many of our products to protect against a wide range of contaminants (this is because some preservatives only protect against bacteria, some only get mold and fungus, etc). These blends of preservatives provide us with what we call 'broad spectrum protection'. The total preservative blend used in our products is less than 0.5% of the total formulation. That means, for example, that if you see five parabens listed on an ingredient declaration, that those five all together only equal less than 0.5% of the total product.

Because parabens are known to penetrate the skin, concern has been voiced by some watchdog organizations that those that are included in cosmetics might act as endocrine disrupters when applied to the skin. Cosmetic chemists who are familiar with the skin-penetration activity of parabens maintain that this is not possible because once they enter the skin, they form metabolites that are incapable of mimicking estrogen.

Additionally, both the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society have web pages dedicated to addressing the internet rumor that antiperspirants and deodorants cause breast cancer.

The bottom line is that the safety of parabens applied to the skin is practically conclusive. Parabens are among the safest ingredients used in cosmetics and drugs. They keep the product safe to use and keep the consumer safe from harm. We will continue to use them in our products until a more effective and cost efficient alternative is identified."

I found a few more online articles that I found very informative and helpful. The FDA even has an article about parabens that says, "The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) reviewed the safety of methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben in 1984 and concluded they were safe for use in cosmetic products at levels up to 25%. [...] In September 2005, the CIR decided to re-open the safety assessment for parabens to request exposure estimates and a risk assessment for cosmetic uses. In December 2005, after considering the margins of safety for exposure to women and infants, the Panel determined that there was no need to change its original conclusion that parabens are safe as used in cosmetics."

You may have also read about this controversy that parabens cause cancer? This was referenced briefly above about parabens being "endocrine disrupters" which means they create estrogen. This is based on a flawed study conducted in England in December 2003. The most glaring fault of the study was that it was performed on a very small sample which showed the presence of parabens located near the area of the underarm. Therefore, the researcher concluded that the parabens must have come from the use of antiperspirants and deodorants. She did not take into account that the tumors were taken post-chemo and that the chemotherapy was preserved with, of all things, parabens!

Anyway, we all consume much higher amounts of parabens than I think you would put on your skin. Parabens occur naturally in such foods like blueberries and carrots! I thought this company had a great explanation of parabens and why they use them in their products. I have used Lush's products before and love how natural and good for you they are. It used to be my go to place every time I visited Vancouver, BC but they now have stores in Bellevue and Seattle. Yipee! Check out their bath bombs. Fizzy! The company originated from England so here is an excerpt from their UK article about parabens: "By choosing preservatives with long history of safe use, we have been able to tap into all the already existing information available, which makes parabens a sensible choice. There have been no substantiated health concerns about parabens. Instead many news articles simply repeat rumours and discredited information. Unfortunately a headline declaring that parabens are considered to be safe is not going to sell as many papers. However, the good news is that they occur in nature - and that the present research considers them to be safe, so you can carry on eating blueberries and carry on enjoying Lush’s fresh, handmade cosmetics on your skin!"

Finally, (I hope you stuck with me so far) I found another blog article about parabens with a similar idea. It is written in a different way and highlights some really great points. Here is just a brief excerpt, "Throughout this article you will find direct links to final statistics and reports from the necessary authorities on this subject. I hope this will finally remove the undue paranoia that has run rampant throughout the internet causing us to double-check our labels and throw out a lot of otherwise great products based on unsubstantiated theory and narrow testing."

Well said!
